Westminster, MD asked in Contracts for Maryland

Q: contractor ripped me off because i wouldnt help him get his drugs

i did side work for a contractor and he refuses to pay me because we got into a argument on the last day finishing up the job because he brought a drug dealer to the job and he asked me to go outside and flag him down and i refused and he acted like a child because someone actually told him no. he has given me the run around 3 times about getting my check. even agreed to release my check if i gave them a letter that i wouldnt sue and still.... wont cough up a check. ive looked in up on maryland case search and turns out he has a 3 page record from traffic to drugs to being sued by his old company name. i have time cards with my hours and even a check to match my hourly wage. he owes me a total of almost 1700 and im not willing to just walk away from it. i worked a total of 70+ hrs while working my real job. full time 40-45 hours a week. during this 2 week period i was working for him i was pushing over 80 hours a week between the real job and side job.

A: From the facts given, it does not appear that the contractor has a legitimate reason why they have not paid you for the work (and possibly overtime) that they owe you. You should discuss with an employment/labor attorney who offers free initial consultations. These kinds of cases are sometimes appropriate for contingency arrangements.
