Asked in Child Support for Alabama

Q: I’m 17 and don’t live with my mom and she is still getting child support for me.

The child support goes threw the state to her and she refuses to give any of it to me. I have text messages from her threatening to call the cops and report me as a run away if I ever tried to get the money. (My step dad and her both told me I wasn’t allowed to live there anymore but I have no proof of that). I’ve talked to my dad and he said since it goes threw the state there isn’t really anything he can do. (I’m in Alabama and my dad is in Mississippi). What can I do to be able to get my child support or just stop my mom from getting it?

A: Hello. The support is FOR you, it's not paid TO you. You're not an adult until you're 19. If you're not living with your mom, then it's your dad who needs to file and have support stopped.
