Q: I live in CA and my cat was stolen out of spite by an old employee. He took my cat with him back to TX and lost him.
What actions can I take against him?
A:
Very sorry to hear about your cat. This person is responsible to you for destruction of your personal property. You have jurisdiction over him here in California since the theft occurred here. You can sue him and then you have to get him served. You may end up getting a default judgment against him. Then you have to hire a TX attorney to get a sister state judgment entered against him in TX and to enforce it (collect). My estimate is that this will cost you about $1000.00. I am sure your cat was precious to you and I don't mean to sound callous, but 1) you will never get the cat back and 2) you can buy a beautiful new cat for a lot less than $1000. I have owned cats myself since 1961, and if someone did this to me I don't know what I would do.
