A: These types of fines are not state law fines, but local county or municipal code infractions. It depends on where you live. Most such local code ordinances prohibit inoperable and unregistered vehicles from remaining on private property more than 30 days because of concerns over property valuation of the surrounding neighborhood, potential eyesore issues of decaying and rusting vehicles, potential pollution from leakage, etc. Fines vary from location to location, but usually are capped in the $250-500 range, plus the vehicle can be towed and the owner charged for the tow fee. If towed, the vehicle may be auctioned. You can contest the ticket, but ultimately, the only way to solve the problem if to get the vehicle operating and registered, or put into a storage lot or garage out of sight.
