Q: If my former friends daughter leaves home at 15 in the state of nc can she make her come home she turns 16 december 4?
The little girl broke it off with her boyfriend because he started hitting on her, her mom turned around and punished the little girl for breaking up with the boy and has in the past beat on the little girl and told her it was her fault that she had gotten pregnant with her little sisters and told her she was going to babysit them while said mom goes to her boyfriend house while her husband sits at home and the little girl has to babysit. Also the fact that you have to crackheads in the home that just got out of prison plus said mother is on probation. How do you get a child out of this situation when the child herself has called DS and DS said they couldn't do anything
A: Turning 16 is irrelevant. A parent can make a child do pretty much whatever they want until the child turns 18 or a court says otherwise. In my experience, DSS loves nothing more than stepping in and taking children and generally making a mess out of everything for everyone involved. So if they have investigated and did not take any action, things likely are not as bad as you describe. However, if you are concerned, you may want to consult with a local family law attorney who can assess the situation in more detail and lay out your options for you. It may be that someone other than the child herself calling DSS might result in a more thorough investigation or there may be other options for the child to be removed from the current living situation. Best of luck.
