However, axes, hatchets and the like are also tools, and may also be collectible items. The criminal laws apply to specific types of conduct, often with a criminal intent element as part of the offense. Most weapons crimes have to do with concealed carry in certain locations, often with criminal intent. Packing and transporting a hatchet or ax on a camping trip, or to cut or clear dead wood on your land, etc., would not be a crime. Prosecutions focus on the criminal intent to use, not typically on the weapon itself.
