Q: Do axes/tomahawks/hatchets count as weapons in Maryland?
A: Yes. They have always been weapons. In addition, any object may fit the definition of a weapon is it is carried or used with intent to injure. However, axes, hatchets and the like are also tools, and may also be collectible items. The criminal laws apply to specific types of conduct, often with a criminal intent element as part of the offense. Most weapons crimes have to do with concealed carry in certain locations, often with criminal intent. Packing and transporting a hatchet or ax on a camping trip, or to cut or clear dead wood on your land, etc., would not be a crime. Prosecutions focus on the criminal intent to use, not typically on the weapon itself.
