Los Angeles, CA asked in Animal / Dog Law for California

Q: My husband found a dog. Wasn’t chipped. I posted on several media sites. Several people came forward.

I returned to someone that came forward with vaccination records the very next day. Someone almost week later claims dog was theres. I didn’t keep any information on other people I gave to. Now I am being harassed by them. I had no idea it would come to this. I tried to do a good thing and now these people are calling all hours of day with different people and numbers. All they have is pic when they got it (years old) and area it was lost. No shot records or license. I want the harassment to stop. I don’t have the dog and I have no contact information to who I gave it to. The number disappeared off my phone after 5 days and I didn’t think to keep it. I have never found a stray dog and didn’t think it would turn into such a big deal.

A: No good deed goes unpunished!! Didn't think it was a big deal? Have you read all the entries on Justia in Animal/Dog Law and seen the way people go crazy about their animals! You were trying to be a good Samaritan, but you didn't call animal control first to see what you were getting yourself into. If you have the information about the location of these people and how to contact them you should go to the local police and tell them you are being harassed, maybe the PD will send an officer out to give them a heads up. Next time, turn the dog over to Animal Control. Sorry you are having these problems.
