Teaberry, KY asked in Family Law and Child Custody for Kentucky

Q: Can my Mamaw take me from my house at 17 without my dad’s permission if I want to leave willingly?

My dad has been putting a lot of stress on me my whole life. He used to physically abuse me, by that I mean he would drag me through the house by my hair, “whoop” me for no reason, and one night he pushed me against my wall choking me. Around October he got mad and picked up my dog, slammed him into the door frame and he’s also kicked him in the side before. Every conversation we have turns into an argument, he never lets me talk and voice my opinion. Today he threw a big jug at me really hard but it slightly missed me, my Mamaw was here when it happened. We’ve tried putting my dad in a mental institution or something so he could get help but they won’t take him. He always yells at me, gets in my face, sometimes calls me bad words. I flinch every time he comes near me. I don’t feel safe in this house. I hate it here. I’d rather be on the streets than live with him, it’s that bad. No one believed me until my Mamaw finally saw how he treated me. I am 17!

A: No. Not unless mamaw has custody.
