Q: Do I still have to give notice if i’m in between leases right now?

my lease expired on march 23rd 2021. Originally I had given a 30 day notice (what’s required per my lease) and was planning on moving to a new complex, but decided to retract my notice and just transfer units (switch from 1 to 2 bed). I have been waiting for over a month for my transfer request to be approved. My lease didn’t renew because i’m supposed to be transferring units, and I haven’t signed a new lease yet. I might’ve found a new place to live; but I’m wondering though, do I still have to give notice, since i’m in lease limbo right now? Can they make me pay any penalty fees if I DO give them a 30 day notice?

A: Your old lease expired, and you haven't signed a new one. For most leases, this means you're a month to month tenant. Check your lease to be sure. If that's the case, you must give a 30 day notice to terminate the lease.
