Margate, FL asked in Animal / Dog Law for Florida

Q: A stray dog bit another dog. We caught the dog for animal control but are now being held liable for the attack.

Why am I being held responsible for a stray dog and what are my rights? We have had the police at our home several times because of the dog. Animal control said they're to full to take it. The humane society isn't accepting dogs. A cop threatened me with going to jail of I didn't vaccinate the dog even though it was on record it was not mine. It's aggressive and tries to fight and bite and I am stuck with it in a crate because the city will not remove it. I'm now waiting for zoom court over the dog and I'm being sued for over 2 grand. This is a dog that's been loose in the neighborhood before & nobody is claiming it.
