Brooklyn, NY asked in Personal Injury and Medical Malpractice for New York

Q: N.Y.S.B.A.?

I am desperately trying to find a medical malpractice attorney in NY to no avail. Everyone keeps telling me to try the New York State Bar Association. Isn't that a paid subscription site? I tried to go on it but I couldn't navigate it correctly. It doesn't help that I'm disabled. Does anyone have a link to what I'm looking for?

Thank you

A: I'm sorry for the frustration you are experiencing in trying to find an attorney. You are correct, the NYSBA could have fees associated with consults. Their website mentions fees, and the details of those arrangements are something to be discussed with them or their attorneys. But as a general rule, most med mal attorneys out there do not charge fees for initial consults. They work on a contingency basis. In addition to law firms you might find through independent online searches, or through other legal directories, there's a feature on this site in the link above, Find-a-Lawyer. Good luck

A: The NYSBA does not have a legal referral service for any of the counties in NYC. Every local bar association in NYC, however, has a legal referral service, such as the Bronx County Bar Association, the Brooklyn County Bar Association, Queens County Bar Association, etc. Almost all medical malpractice attorneys work on a contingency fee and do not charge a fee for an initial consultation. You can find many excellent malpractice attorneys using the Find a Lawyer tab on the JUSTIA homepage.
