Q: I'm in high school and I believe that the lessons being taught are inappropriate. Can I lawfully record the lessons?

A: If the school and school district do not have a rule against recording classroom lessons and the teacher giving the lesson consents, you should be able to lawfully record the lessons for your own personal use.

Many schools prohibit this activity because of confidentiality laws, especially those relating to personally identifiable information concerning students. Other students’ interactions with the teacher giving the lessons are likely protected by both state and federal law.

A teacher giving a lecture to a class you are a part of is different than give-and-take question and answer sessions with other members of the class.
