Victoria, TX asked in Family Law for Texas

Q: I have 2 different last names listed on various legal docs, one under Smith and another under Williams.

I can’t renew my state ID card because the name on my ID is different from my Social Security Card. At the Social Security Admin office, they won’t change my legal name on SS Card without a valid, unexpired ID. Customer service representatives from both Texas DPS and SSA office told me that there’s nothing they can do. They suggested changing my legal name at the court, but I can’t do that either without a valid ID.

John Smith

- Birth certificate

- Texas State ID card (expired)

- Texas Voter Registration card (current)

- School diploma but no ID

- High School Transcript

John Williams

- Social Security card

- School record, report cards, but no ID

Social security admin will not help since my I.D is expired, and DPS will not renew my I.D since my Social security card has a different last name.
