Rahway, NJ asked in Traffic Tickets for New York

Q: Got speeding ticket in NYC last yr but I have since moved out of state, if guilty would the points transfer to new state

I received a ticket in NYC for driving "22 above speed limit" but I moved outside of NY state and have a new license in a different state. If found guilty, do the points transfer?

A: Hi. Every state is different. However New Jersey will add 2 points for every New York violation. More importantly, your insurance carrier is able to out-of-state violations which could result in an increase in your insurance premium. As such, you should absolutely contact a New York attorney to defend your charges. An attorney can appear on your behalf so you will not have to ever appear in court.

A: If you moved outside of the NY tri-state area, the points should NOT transfer. But, you should not just plead guilty to the ticket because your insurance rates can still go up. Where did you get the ticket and when is the hearing date? Call me at 516 766 1878 to discuss further.

A: If you are convicted in NY, NY "should" report the conviction to your new state. Check with your new state (you didn't specify which one) whether they will record the reported conviction, or not.
