A: To get your kids back, you should hire a board-certified family lawyer in or near the county where the court is located.

If CPS is in any way involved in your case, you need to find out how much experience the lawyer has had with CPS cases in the recent past, as many family lawyers do not necessarily have much if any experience in CPS cases. Recent past experience is a must in this type of case.

Be sure to make the necessary financial arrangements in advance. Many parents lose custody cases because they are unwilling to fund the attorney fees and legal expenses necessary to successfully pursue their case. One of the worst possible scenarios is when a parent creates the appearance that they are willing to fight for their child by depositing a basic $15,000-20,000 initial retainer, only to run out of funds later as trial is approaching. Then they don't have money to pay their expert witnesses or attorneys to continue the case at a critical, and expensive, juncture.
