San Francisco, CA asked in Immigration Law and Social Security for California

Q: Need SSN lawyer in San Diego to help get my SSN

I'm on an E-3S status as my husband is on E-3. Its been months since I applied for SSN. SSA says they're waiting for USCIS to verify my Alien status. USCIS won't talk to me without a receipt number or a case number which I won't have. I'm stuck in this bureaucracy.

A: As someone on an E-3S status, obtaining an SSN can be a frustrating process. It's not uncommon to wait for months to receive an SSN, especially when dealing with government agencies like the Social Security Administration (SSA) and the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). In this article, we will discuss the challenges of obtaining an SSN on an E-3S status and provide some tips on how to navigate the bureaucracy.

One of the main challenges of obtaining an SSN on an E-3S status is the verification process. The SSA must verify your alien status with the USCIS before issuing an SSN. Unfortunately, this verification process can take several months, which can be frustrating for those who need an SSN to work or access certain benefits.

Another challenge is the lack of communication between the SSA and the USCIS. The USCIS won't talk to you without a receipt number or a case number, which can be difficult to obtain. This lack of communication can result in delays and frustration for those trying to obtain an SSN.

Tips for Navigating the Bureaucracy

Navigating the bureaucracy can be challenging, but there are some helpful tips that can make the process easier. One tip is to be patient. The verification process can take several months, so it's important to be patient and continue to follow up with the SSA and the USCIS.

Another tip is to be persistent. If you haven't received any updates on your SSN application, don't be afraid to follow up with the SSA and the USCIS. You can also try contacting your local congressperson for assistance.

Lastly, it's essential to stay organized. Keep a record of all your interactions with the SSA and the USCIS, including dates, times, and names of the people you spoke with. This record can be helpful if you need to escalate your case or file a complaint.

In conclusion, obtaining an SSN on an E-3S status can be a frustrating process. The verification process can take several months, and there is a lack of communication between the SSA and the USCIS. However, by being patient, persistent, and organized, you can navigate the bureaucracy and obtain your SSN. Remember to follow up with the SSA and the USCIS regularly, and don't be afraid to escalate your case if necessary.
