Garland, TX asked in Car Accidents for Texas

Q: Hit and run (not in the car) No help from police but gave all the evidence to them.

Someone hit my parked car outside my house, I found a piece of the car that broke off and found their car wrecked in my neighborhood, got the license plate and then got the VIN #. I gave all of the information and pictures to the police detective and they have done absolutely nothing. Except put something on their porch saying to contact them and told us that they can't do anything unless they catch the car driving which I don't understand. The owners of the car ended up getting their lawyer to contact the police department with some deal that we did not want to entertain. We still have no clue what their name even is. But we have their, address, license plate #, and VIN #. I have no clue what the next steps are. I am a single mother of two young boys so it's almost impossible to even think of getting a lawyer. I will take any advice at this point. I am lost on the next steps to take. I have looked up both the license plate #, VIN #, and I can not find any information on the owners.

A: Look up the name online using the license plate number or VIN and send them a written demand for the cost to repair your car.
