A: Generally, paying back property taxes alone does not automatically grant ownership of a house. The rules and regulations regarding tax foreclosures and property ownership vary by jurisdiction. If back property taxes are not paid, the local government may initiate a tax foreclosure process, which could lead to the property being sold at a tax sale or auction. If there are other individuals with potential claims to the property, such as the daughter of the deceased owner in this case, it can further complicate the situation. It is crucial to consult with a local attorney who can review the specific circumstances, including any relevant documentation or agreements, and provide accurate advice based on the applicable laws in your area.
