Tampa, FL asked in Civil Litigation for Florida

Q: What can I do?

I keep getting calls from some business stating I have a civil case. They know my address. They keep asking for the last 4 of my ssn and I’m not giving them that information. They keep talking about a judge and civil claims… how can I find out if there’s any civil proceedings against me in any state? (I’m sure I don’t) but just to be safe

A: Nobody calls asking for social security numbers if there is, in fact, a civil case filed against you.

You'd be served with a lawsuit by a process server, that's in person.

You can go to the county clerk's website and do a public search.

I'd block their calls.

A: I agree with Ms. Kim, but another option is to ask the caller for the full name of the case (plaintiff's and defendant's names), the name and location of the court, and the case number. Your description sounds like it is either (A) a scammer, or (B) a legitimate collector (such as a collection agency) who, when asking for last 4 of your social, wishes to verify that they are talking to the correct person rather than another party to whom they should not divulge your information - plus they are either threatening suit (which is legal) or they are illegally misrepresenting that a suit is already filed. Even if it could be a legitimate collector, you are correct that you should NOT give your SSN or any part thereof over the phone. If you get a letter threatening suit or are served with suit, see a lawyer.
