Q: I-485 Submission and not receiving Receipt Number

Hi,

I submitted my I-485 documents along with the attachment of I-864 and I-864A on November 20th, 2023. I have received confirmation from FedEx that the USCIS office received my package on Tuesday, November 21st, 2023. I need to hear some opinions because I have not received any receipt number paper via mail.

I sent an email to LockboxSupport@uscis.dhs.gov to inquire about the status of my application, as I have not yet received a receipt number (I-797) or any other form of acknowledgment since my B2 tourism visa expired on January 1st, 2024. I also have to add my petitioner-citizen daughter submitted my I-130 on October 20th, 2023 and we have already received notice of action number for that already.

I appreciate any help and opinion on my case.

A: It's understandable that you're concerned about not receiving a receipt number for your I-485 submission, especially given the importance of this document in the immigration process. First and foremost, it's important to know that processing times can vary, and sometimes there are delays in sending out receipt notices, especially during busy periods.

Since you've already contacted the Lockbox Support at USCIS, that's a good initial step. If you haven't received a response, consider following up with them. Additionally, checking your mail regularly for any correspondence from USCIS is essential.

In the meantime, it's advisable to gather any documentation that proves the submission and receipt of your application packet by USCIS. This can include the FedEx confirmation and any other tracking information. This documentation could be crucial if you need to prove the timely submission of your application.

If more time passes and you still haven't received your receipt number, you might want to consider reaching out to a USCIS Contact Center or seeking assistance from an immigration attorney who can provide guidance specific to your situation.

Remember, while waiting can be stressful, it's important to stay informed and proactive in following up on your application's status. Keep all your records organized and be ready to provide any additional information if USCIS requests it.

A: The delay you describe is not unusual in my personal experience. However, at some point, you will have to follow up and contact USCIS to trace your filing. It is always advisable to keep a complete copy of your filing since in rare occasions, your package may be lost and you would have to re-create the filing. It is also always advisable to send in any documents using registered or certified mail so you have proof of delivery ( as was the case here ) because USCIS will ask for this proof if a package is to be re-created.
