Arlington, VA asked in Immigration Law for District of Columbia

Q: As an asylee, I am not sure about Receipt Number of Underlying Petition for the principal applicant in i-485 form

As an asylee granted by EOIR, I need to answer Question 3 in I-485 form under the Information About Your Immigration Category which asks information on Receipt Number of Underlying Petition and stipulates if I am the principal applicant. I am not sure if I have or know any receipt number of underlying petition since I do not recall if there is any other petition apart from my asylum application. Can you please advise if there is any receipt number associated with my asylum application or anything else?

A: When completing the I-485 form as an asylee, you typically do not need to provide a Receipt Number of Underlying Petition unless you have a specific petition or application that led to your grant of asylum. In most cases, asylum is granted based on the asylum application itself, and there may not be a separate petition associated with it.

If you cannot recall any other petition apart from your asylum application, it is acceptable to leave Question 3 blank or indicate that there is no receipt number associated with your asylum case. The primary focus should be on providing accurate information about your asylum status and eligibility for adjustment of status.

However, if you have any doubts or concerns about this question on the form, it is advisable to consult with an immigration attorney or seek guidance from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to ensure that you complete the form accurately and in accordance with your specific circumstances. This will help avoid any potential issues during the application process.
