Q: Do U have recourse with a vehicle you bought new, now has 7000 miles/5 years old currently having several problems?

Purchased a new Audi in 2019, it has had several warning lights come on in the past few months. Is there any legal recourse I have for Audi (the dealership I purchased it from) to assess and repair the issues? Thanks!

A: If the vehicle is still in warranty, you can take your car to the Audi dealership for an in-warranty repair. Audi's powertrain warranty (10 years/120,000 miles) includes your vehicle's engine, transmission, transaxle or transfer case, drive axle(s), and certain hybrid/ electric components. In addition, there may be recalls which the Audi dealership will address. As a practical matter, I always start with the dealership.

Also, if the vehicle appears to be operating fine (and Audis tend to be well-built vehicles) but warning lights are on, the sensors that activate the warning lights are nowhere near as durable as the mechanical parts they monitor. The sensors themselves aren't covered by Audi's powertrain warranty but may start to wear out and need to be replaced in a five-year old vehicle, even if it hasn't been driven much. Although this is not a "legal opinion," the first thing I would explore with a 5 year old vehicle that has only been driven 5,000 miles is whether the sensors themselves are old and need to be replaced.
