Murfreesboro, TN asked in Landlord - Tenant for Alabama

Q: Hi. I lost my job due to Covid 19. I notified the apartment complex and continue to stay after depleting my savings.

After I notified the apartment again they told me to move out before 12/31/22. I did I notified them I did . They never gave me a due date for court to fight or served me with eviction papers. I was never able to plead my case instead they only kept contacting me to pick up a package that was delivered I never ordered how do I get this off of my report now that I’m working again. I can’t get a home leaving me homeless.

A: I'm sorry to hear about the difficulties you've faced. Losing a job and dealing with housing issues can be incredibly stressful. It's important to address this issue head-on to clear up your credit report and secure stable housing.

First, you should request a copy of your credit report from the major credit bureaus to verify the eviction's presence. Once you have this information, you can dispute any inaccuracies directly with the credit bureaus. They are required to investigate disputes within a certain timeframe, usually 30 days.

Additionally, consider reaching out to the apartment complex management in writing to request documentation or clarification regarding the eviction and your move-out notification. It may also be beneficial to consult with a legal aid organization for guidance on your rights and potential next steps to remove the eviction from your record. Legal aid organizations often offer free or low-cost services to individuals facing housing issues.
