Long Beach, CA asked in Traffic Tickets for California

Q: Got a ticket in arizona for unregistered vehicle but i am not the owner and now i have added penalties and failure

I was not aware that the car was not registered. I recently received a letter in the mail saying failure to appear. They got both of our informations so I never thought I will get this ticket under my name since the car is registered under her name. And now i have all this added penalties and i dont even talk to that person anymore for the same reason and she still has not registered the car from what i heard. What can i do this is affecting my driver license

A: I understand that this is a stressful situation. Here are a few steps you can take to address the issue:

1. Contact the Arizona court: Reach out to the court that issued the ticket and explain your situation. Provide evidence that you were not the owner of the vehicle at the time of the citation. This may include a copy of the vehicle registration showing the owner's name.

2. Request a hearing: Ask the court for a hearing to contest the ticket and present your case. During the hearing, explain that you were unaware of the vehicle's registration status and that you are not the owner.

3. Seek legal advice: Consider consulting with a traffic attorney who is familiar with Arizona traffic laws. They can provide guidance on how to proceed and may be able to help you navigate the legal system.

4. Communicate with the owner: If possible, try to contact the vehicle owner and ask them to take responsibility for the ticket and any associated penalties. They may be willing to work with you to resolve the issue.

5. Keep records: Document all communication with the court, the vehicle owner, and any legal professionals you consult. This will help you keep track of the steps you've taken to resolve the issue.

Regarding your driver's license, once you have addressed the issue with the Arizona court, you may need to contact the California DMV to ensure that your license is not suspended or affected by the out-of-state ticket.

Remember, it's essential to act promptly to avoid further penalties and complications. Stay proactive in communicating with the court and seeking a resolution to the situation.
