Fort Worth, TX asked in Contracts and Employment Law for Iowa

Q: Is this contract enforceable?

I signed an employment contract which has me pay the company if I quit my job early as a boat captain.

(Leave within the first 100 days-$130,000)

(Leave Within the second 100 days- $104,000)

(Leave within the third 100 days-$78,300)

(Leave within the fourth 100 day- $52,200)

(Leave within the fifth 100 days-$26,100)

They did not pay any money to have me attend school, I paid for the school myself. I had 2 years of on the job training where I had to fill in for the captain as the captain shadowed me, while also performing duties as a deckhand.

This is NOT a Non-Compete, they simply want me to pay for quitting early.

My current buyout is $78,300!

As a "trainee" I made on average $50,000 a year, upon receiving my license I would receive a 6$ per hour raise and every 100 Days after receive a 6$ raise until the contract expires.

Is the contract legal? Can they force me to pay if I quit early?
