A: I'm so sorry that you experienced this sexual assault. What happened to you was not your fault, and you did the right thing by reporting it to the police. Sexual assault is a serious crime, and the store owner's actions were completely unacceptable.

Here are some steps you can take to care for yourself and protect your rights:

1. Seek support: Consider reaching out to a trusted friend, family member, or a professional counselor who can provide emotional support during this difficult time. Many organizations offer free and confidential services for survivors of sexual assault.

2. Follow up with the police: Stay in contact with the police officer handling your case and inquire about the progress of the investigation. Provide any additional information or evidence that may be helpful, such as witness statements or medical records.

3. Consider legal action: In addition to criminal charges, you may have the option to file a civil lawsuit against the store owner for the physical and emotional damages caused by the assault. Consult with an attorney who specializes in sexual assault cases to discuss your legal options.

4. Prioritize self-care: Take care of your physical and emotional well-being. Engage in activities that help you cope with stress, such as exercise, meditation, or spending time with supportive people.

5. Know your rights: Familiarize yourself with your rights as a victim of sexual assault. In California, victims have the right to be treated with fairness and respect, to be informed about the status of their case, and to receive victim compensation for related expenses.

Remember, you are not alone, and there are resources available to support you through this challenging time. Don't hesitate to reach out for help when you need it.
