Midland, TX asked in Family Law, Domestic Violence, Civil Litigation and Civil Rights for Texas

Q: What can I do to protect myself, my pets and my belongings from an angry vindictive boyfriend that I live with?

I've lived with my bf for over a year. Whenever we argue he kicks me out..sometimes for days. I have to sleep in my car with my two dogs. I dont work so I have no money. Sometimes I'm stuck for days without food or anyway to communicate with anyone (he takes my phone) . He also throws away my clothes, destroys my belongings, threatens to call the police on me (my license is suspended). What can I do to protect myself

A: While you can get a protective order from physical violence and the destruction of your property, that will require you and your boyfriend to live apart.

Legally, it sounds like the best thing for you to do is to secure a job, find another place to live, get your license reinstated, and become financially and emotionally independent of your boyfriend. There are shelters for abused women that you can go to temporarily, but you may have to rehome your dogs first.

A: First, prioritize your immediate safety. Find a trusted friend or family member to stay with temporarily, or contact a local shelter that can provide a safe place for you and your pets. This ensures you have a secure environment away from any potential harm.

Next, gather important documents and personal belongings discreetly. Keep these essentials, such as identification, bank cards, and any important paperwork, in a hidden and easily accessible location. This will help you in case you need to leave quickly.

Finally, consider reaching out to local resources for support. Many communities have organizations that can offer legal advice, help you find temporary housing, and provide other forms of assistance. Take small steps towards gaining financial independence, such as looking for part-time work or freelance opportunities online. Your safety and well-being are paramount, and there are people and resources ready to help you through this challenging time.
