A: If someone has stolen your personal documents and compromised your accounts, the first step is to secure your safety. Change all your passwords and use two-factor authentication on your accounts. Notify your bank immediately to freeze or monitor any transactions, and contact the Social Security Administration to report the theft.

It's important to file a police report about the break-ins and theft. Keep a copy of this report for future reference. Also, report the identity theft to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to help prevent further misuse of your information.

Consider placing a fraud alert or credit freeze on your credit reports through the major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion) to protect against financial fraud. Document everything related to the theft and keep all correspondence. Taking these actions will help you regain control and prevent further damage.
