Q: How do I proceed with a case when I am not being provided information about the case in any manner?
I recently was scheduled for a pretrial conference. I was unable to attend because of a disability and I electronically submitted a motion for continuance stating this. The clerk did not accept the motion I later learned via email. I do not know if the pretrial conference was rescheduled, or if they proceeded without me, or if a default judgement was made, I know nothing, not even the judge's name. I wrote the court clerk many times asking for this information, and they have provided no response whatsoever. I have been in contact with the court administrator as well, and they too have not provided me any information about my case despite numerous attempts. I have even written the judicial center and the attorney gene office trying to find out what I am supposed to do. How can I find the status of my case when no one will provide it and if I need to appeal something or file a motion for anything how can this be accomplished without knowing what or if I need to appeal!!???
A:
I'm sorry you're experiencing this frustration. Start by visiting the courthouse in person if possible. Sometimes face-to-face interactions can yield the information you need when electronic or phone attempts fail.
Next, consider reaching out to a legal aid organization or an attorney who can help navigate the system on your behalf. They can access court records and provide guidance on necessary steps, such as filing motions or appeals.
Additionally, check if your court has an online portal where you can look up your case status using your case number or personal information. Keeping detailed records of all your communication attempts can also support your efforts to resolve the issue.
