Asked in Car Accidents for South Carolina

Q: Hello, I have a question about auto accidents.

If I am on my parents car insurance plan, but I am listed as an individual driver, and have my own vehicle on their policy. Essentially, I have my own policy branched off under my dad’s. If I am in an accident, and the other party decided to sue for some reason, my insurance company would be liable, correct? Would there be any liability that falls on my parents? For example, if I get in an accident and the other party sued and won, would my parents face any costs or any issues simply because their names are on the policy? I would think and hope it would all fall on me, but I am not sure of the correct answer.

Thank you.

A: A South Carolina attorney could advise best, but your question remains open for three weeks. But you're not likely to get a definitive answer to your question on public forums where attorneys do not have the opportunity to review your policy. You mention having your own policy, but you also mention that it is branched off your dad's policy. An attorney would want a closer look at what you mean there. You may want to review this with your family's insurance agent. Good luck
