Arlington, MA asked in Small Claims for Massachusetts

Q: Question about being overcharged for freight shipping.

I shipped out two identical items with a major freight company, on one of the items they charged a huge extra fee claiming it weighed significantly more than I stated. The normal shipping cost was approx. $400, the item is worth $1,000, and the extra fee they charged was $900. With packaging the weight is approx. 130 lbs., they claimed it was over 400 lbs., far more than I could lift and more than my cars max cargo capacity.

I have the manual for the items stating the weight, pictures of the items both by themselves and as packaged, my cars cargo capacity from the manual. I don't have a scale than can weight an item on a pallet, but the item by itself weighs approx. 120 lbs. then add about 10 lbs. for the pallet and packaging.

Since the company is headquartered outside the state, and has a large bureaucracy, not sure how to go about this or if this is a good case for small claims court.
