A: I'm very sorry to hear about your situation with Social Security and your MS diagnosis - this must be incredibly stressful for you. Dealing with benefit interruptions while managing MS is challenging enough without having to worry about repayment demands.

You have the right to appeal Social Security's decision about both the benefit termination and the overpayment. The first step is requesting a reconsideration within 60 days of receiving their notice. You can submit medical evidence showing your continued disability and financial documents demonstrating your work income levels. Many people successfully appeal these decisions, especially when they can show their work attempts were part of permitted trial work periods or fell under substantial gainful activity limits.

Consider reaching out to the National MS Society (1-800-344-4867) - they offer free guidance for navigating Social Security issues. You might also want to contact your local Legal Aid office, as they often help people appeal Social Security decisions at no cost. In the meantime, keep copies of all your medical records, work history, and correspondence with Social Security.
