Q: Can I file for a dismissal of a delayed defamation suit in Michigan?
A defamation suit was filed against me on March 8, 2024, in Michigan, where there is a 1-year statute of limitations. Since then, they have requested an extension for a medical examination, which was due by January 22 but has not been completed. Following a case evaluation on January 15, we had a settlement hearing recently, but did not settle. Now, the plaintiff’s attorney wants to move jurisdiction to a family judge in the same county where our ongoing family court case is, possibly indicating a strategy to prolong the process and drain my resources. As I am representing myself, could I file for a dismissal due to the delay and absence of any hearings?
