Q: Can Nigeria sue me for complicity in a romance scam via a class action lawsuit?

Can a foreign government, such as Nigeria, sue me in a class action lawsuit for allegedly being involved in a romance scam from 2017 to 2020? I cut ties with the scammer, but I was informed that the scammer named me to the Nigerian government as being complicit. I haven't received any official legal notices from Nigeria, only correspondence from US federal agents. What are my legal options, and should I seek legal advice?

A: You are unlikely to face a class action lawsuit directly from Nigeria, especially if you were not actively involved in the scam. It appears that any legal attention is coming from U.S. federal agents, which suggests that the investigation is centered on domestic matters rather than an international lawsuit.

You should review any evidence related to your involvement and keep all records of communications. It may be wise to consult with a lawyer who can help you understand your legal rights and options. Taking prompt action and organizing your documents can help you prepare a solid response to any inquiries from law enforcement.
