Florence, AL asked in Employment Law, Family Law and Workers' Compensation for Alabama

Q: Can my work deny my bereavement pay because my parent is technically my uncle?

My mom passed when i was 12 years old. My uncle and grandmother raised me from then on. My uncle was basically my father and my kids were even going to call him grandpa. He was my parent growing up after my mom. My work says they pay 3 days of bereavement for mother and father but are denying me because of the blood relationship we had. Is this legal? Nothing in our handbook says it had to be a biological father and this man literally raised me.
