Asked in Consumer Law for Rhode Island

Q: Who is responsible in this flooring dispute?

Basically, I was contracted to finish sand and apply 3 coats of poly to a new hardwood floor.

The floor installer had left several black marks and some uneven boards.

The homeowner insisted that I repair these marks left by the installer even though I recommended that the few boards be replaced to assure perfection, since I was not contracted to perform any repair nor was paid to perform any repair and I made it clear that I made no guarantees but I would do what I could to try to please the homeowner. There was no contract for these repairs. Now they are trying to get $1500 refunded for the services.
