A: A listing is a form of advertising. Some listings are informal or may undertaken by a home owner alone, such as the use of "For Sale By Owner" signs or placing information about the home in the "Classifieds" section of a newspaper publication. Other listings require an affiliation with a listing service, such as those used by licensed real estate professionals, e.g., Realtors.

In either case, you may always request that a listing be discontinued. In the case of the latter, however, you may have signed a listing agreement in which you and your agent or broker identify the terms and conditions for marketing your home to prospective purchasers and the compensation that will be due in exchange for such services. In such a case, even if you decide to discontinue listing your home for sale, you may still have obligations until or after the listing agreement is cancelled or expires.
