Q: Child Support in Rhode Island - I was court ordered to pay child support in the amount of $150 per week in 2005.
Since roughly 2012 my daughter stays with me almost every night of the week. She hasn't stayed at her mothers house more than 10 nights since 2012. Its by my own choice and the choice of my daughter that she stays with me. The mother has custody but doesn't mind if she stays with me all the time. During these past 5 years or so Ive still been paying child support. In addtiton I'm also paying to feed and clothe my daughter and pay for everything she needs. There was a time I would take her to her mothers house when I went to work in the morning and her mother would drive her to school but now my daughter takes the bus right from my house and almost doesn't even go to her moms house anymore. I would really like to get that child support order dropped seeing I'm already paying for everything. My daughter is 11 years old. Seems young but shes mature. I come home from work every morning to see her get on the bus and give her lunch. Should I move forward and what steps to take?
A: Meet with a family law attorney to discuss a motion to modify your case. Bring all of the prior orders and discuss what you are trying to achieve.
