Q: I'm 17 and have recently graduated from high school. Can I leave the state to attend college without my guardian consent
I've been placed with my grandmother since I was a child but she does not have custody of me or actual guardianship. My mother is mentally incompetent to care for me and my father is incarcerated. I have family I've planned to live with in another state and attend college that I've been accepted to. This has been the plan since high school started but now my grandmother and mother are saying I cannot leave. Is this true when I've already graduated? Can legal action be taken if I leave?
A:
You are a minor, so you might have to obey whoever has legal custody of you until you are 18. Here is a link to more information: https://www.ohiobar.org/forpublic/resources/lawyoucanuse/pages/lawyoucanuse-255.aspx
Talk to your HS counselor or principal, or other trusted adult, and ask them talk to your grandmother and mother, or to help you find assistance.
