Q: Can I get custody of my half sister?
My birth mom (I'm adopted) is due to have my half sister in 3 weeks. Her and her boyfriend are both living on the street. She has schizophrenia and also HEP C. They have no items for the baby and no way to take care of her. Is there a way to go about getting custody of her? i don't want her going Into foster care and us getting separated. I have a child of my own and am more than capable of taking care of her. I am 20 going to college and have a job. I care so much about this baby and her well being. What can I do?
A:
It sounds like your mom may be getting help from DHS. You might talk with mom and her caseworker about getting the baby when it's released from the hospital.
You should consult an experienced Family Law attorney for help on this matter to help you become the Guardian of the baby. This will help your custody become more stable, and not subject to the whims of DHS workers.
