Q: If I can't get a hold of my landlord because they disconnected their phone, should I withhold rent for my last month?
I've had a hard time getting my landlord to call me back for over 7 months. Now that I want to talk to her about giving her a 30 day notice, I find out that her phone (home and cell) are disconnected.
I'm sending a certified 30-day notice via USPS certified mail to her P.O. Box, but want to make sure she knows it's coming.
A: The lease provisions control. So follow the 'notice' requirements of your lease. Holding back rent because the telephone number is inactive is not a good idea. Sending out notice with a tracking tool (overnite) or certified mail is a good step to take.
