Q: Is it legal for my employer to tell my customers my political views without my consent?
I am a bartender at a local restaurant and one of the owners likes to tell customers my political views because she doesn't agree with them. I don't believe in talking about my views at work because I make money on tips. The problem is she knows that I'm a Democrat and will sometimes tell customers that and will tell them who I voted for without my consent.
A: It's legal for her to do so. There is no duty of confidentiality with your employer the way there is with a doctor, lawyer, or psychologist. If you don't want people at work to know your views, don't tell them and they won't be able to tell anyone else.
