Q: What does group plan terminated due to termination of employment mean as far as my job goes

I'm currently out on workmans compinsation and I recieved a cobra election form letter saying that my plan is terminated due to termination of employment. I called my director of human resources but was told he didn't know what was going on and that he would call me back by the end of day and I never heard back from him. That was a week ago and now I recieved a letter from my life insurance/ disability company saying that's been terminated as well. Did my job terminate me and just not tell me and if so what should I do.

A: Your employer probably pays group health premiums on your behalf and you also pay a portion. The same is probably true with your life insurance. If you aren't working, then they will not continue to make payments on your behalf until you return. They will and can legally cancel your private health. You can continue to make the payments on your own if you want to keep the health insurance under COBRA which lasts for 18 months. After that period runs out, you will be on your own. This will not effect your workers' compensation benefits. You will still be entitled to workers' compensation. I don't know if you have been terminated or not. You will need to check with your employer.
