Norman, OK asked in Child Custody, Civil Rights and Family Law for Oklahoma

Q: Can I legally house a runaway friend who is an out of state minor?

I'm 24 and I live in Oklahoma, I have a friend who is 13 in Florida who is living with emotional abuse from parents including gaslighting and physical abuse from a younger sibling. Is there any legal way for me to house them without consent of their parents? I am worried about them but I do not know if the police will take their case seriously.

A: You should be safe, IF you immediately consult with Oklahoma DHS and report the abuse to them, and you have a good, safe home for the 13 year old to temporarily stay in while an investigation is conducted. However, there is a chance the child may be returned to Florida for investigation there.

You should consult an experienced Family Law Attorney, in your area, for help with this problem and to help with DHS.
