Q: Working without contract on IT project. Started 2nd job to make ends meet (IT project taking months). Hurt on 2nd job.

I was unable to complete the IT project because I was injured on the 2nd job. I had completed hundreds of hours of IT work and had about 200 hours to finish the project. The company I was working on the IT project for says they are not going to pay me. I sent the invoice to the company I did the IT work for but they ignored it. How do I get paid for the IT work even though I did not have a contract? They had someone else finish the work, so there went even more hours I obviously missed out on. Is there a document I can get them to sign? A statement from them regarding my employment status? Something from them to get compensated for the work I did for them? Is this something workmans compensation will cover even though I was not an employee and the injury happened on a job where I was an employee for another company?

A: You should have a contract. A contract can be written or verbal. Obviously, its much harder to prove up a verbal contract, but if you can then they would owe you the money. I'm not too sure how much they owe you. This may effect where a lawsuit would need to be filed. You should get an email address or communicate with your employer in writing to document efforts to get them to pay. It would be good to speak to an employment law attorney about this.
