Corona, NY asked in Child Support, Divorce and Family Law for New Jersey

Q: I have just turned 18 years old, Can I sue my biological mother for back child support.

I am still in high school, struggling to maintain a solid source of income, and head into college and move out. Ever since my parents divorced, my mother has made no attempts to visit or help me out with any financial or emotional problems. This is a continuous cycle in my family with my mother and her children and I am putting my foot down before it is too late.

A: Thank you for your question.

Typically, New Jersey only allows retroactive child support to the date a formal application is made with the Court. In order to better assist you, we would need more information, for example, what type of agreement or Court Order has been established during or after your parents’ divorce.
