Q: My wife's ex-husband owes $18,000 in back child support he wants her to settle for $5,000 cash is this legal

My wife's ex-husband and her had two kids together of what she's paid little to no child support over the years and he does have a job as police officer he wants her to accept 5,000 in cash and sign something so that he doesn't have to owe any future or any more child support is this legal

A: Is it legal? Probably. Is it wise? No, it isn't wise. It is highly likely the court will enforce the original order and make the ex-husband pay the full amount. Further, if your wife hires an attorney to help her collect the back child support it is highly likely the court will make the ex-husband pay her attorney fees and court costs.

A: She can accept $5000 fpr past arrearages, so long as they r not owed to the state. She cannot stop future child support.
