Q: My husband and I want to adopt our nieces. Currently my parents have full custody of them. What should we do?
My husband and I live in Oklahoma, while my parents live in Tennessee. My parents were awarded full custody in the Fall of 2015. They have not yet adopted the two girls, but are wanting to adopt them as well. Both of my neices parents have been known drug users and in and out of jail. I'm just looking what we should do if we want to proceed with adopting, since we live in a different state than them.
A:
You should consult an experienced Family Law Attorney, in their area in Tennessee for help with this problem. Since the kids are there, that's where an adoption must be filed. You can also contact their DHS Caseworker and express your concern about drug use, and let them know about your desire to adopt.
