Germantown, MD asked in Traffic Tickets for Maryland

Q: Pulled over by a cop and I wasnt aware my license expired less than a month ago. TA 16-101(a1) charge. Will i go to jail

Cop pulled me over without any reasoning. He saw my license and it turns out that it was expired less than a month ago and I was not aware of since i did not get anything in the mail. He wrote "Driving motor vehicle on highway without required license and authorization" I am really worried since i have never appeared in must appear before in court and I am going to renew my license tomorrow and i got a ticket last night. Is there any jail time involved and should I hire a lawyer?,I am college student and paying a lawyer will be too much for me. Please help cause i am really worried.

A: Most prosecutors will drop the charge entirely if you appear with your valid drivers license. You should not have been charged with driving without a license, but rather with driving on an expired license, which does not carry jail—only a fine (and no points). If you can afford a lawyer that would be better, to ensure the proper result, but you should not worry about jail.
