Rockville Centre, NY asked in Estate Planning, Tax Law and Probate for Texas

Q: I discovered after mom's death that she hadn't filed my taxes in 22yrs and I haven't filed 2018. What am I obliged to do

I'm 63 + living on a small pension, disability and retirement savings. I've always sent my mom(CPA) all my tax stuff. During this time the IRS has only contacted me 2x re fraudulent returns + gave me a pin#. She must've felt I'd owe $0. Can I file the last 6yrs taxes only(incl 2018)? My 2018 expenses were $135,000 paying both our bills/debts. I inherited $ in 2019 after Probate(in NY) but haven't yet sold her house or taken over her 401K's, IRA's, EE Bonds, CD's to pay myself back. I have no mortgage or credit debt because I own my house + car + pay bills in full monthly (Ins, Amex, utilities, cable/INT/phone, cell). I pay taxes on withdrawals from 1 Inherited IRA. If I'm owed any refunds would it be worth my time +$? Where would I even get Tax return (short + long) forms for past 22yrs to find out first or to file? Wouldn't a CPA cost $$ to do 23yrs worth? Mom lived in NY, me in TX since 2001. Disability + pension began 2000.

A: You need to contact a CPA as soon as possible and discuss this with them. The forum is for general answers and your situation requires a private consultation with an expert.

A: The very first thing you SHOULD do is get off the Internet and stop posting public admissions about what could be described as criminal tax evasion. Hire a CPA and/or tax lawyer today. (Note: I can guarantee you that whatever amount of CPA fees and/or lawyer fees you pay will not even come close to your 2018 expenses of $135,000.)
